What is the Difference Between DEEP TISSUE and SPORTS THERAPY?

Many people come to me, not knowing the difference between deep tissue and sports therapy sessions. Knowing the difference between these two types of massage can help determine the best session for the desired effect.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

As its name explains, a deep tissue massage uses more specific, deeper pressure to manipulate the inner tissue layers in the body. Deep tissue sessions focus on reducing tension and stiffness – the technique stimulates blood flow to the muscles, oxygenating them more efficiently and speeding up recovery. Pressure starts moderate, but increases during the session – it can be uncomfortable at times. However, always let the therapist know if the session ever becomes painful; pain is NOT gain, here.

This type of pressure is adequate for releasing any newly formed or moderate knots and to lengthen contracted muscles. New or small knots differ from large tension knots created by repetitive motion or action over time or because of trauma. Deep tissue therapists focus on releasing these knots. They may focus the session in a specific area to loosen compacted muscle tissues.

While acute knots are treated well with regular deep tissue massage, large tension knots caused by chronic tension or because of injury are better suited to a sports therapy session.

SPORTS THERAPY MASSAGE

Sports therapy is the manipulation of soft tissue (muscle) to prevent or rehabilitate sports injuries. The therapist has a more comprehensive, detailed medical knowledge and application understanding. Sports therapy sessions are targeted for and concentrate on managing minor, chronic, and repetitive injuries. Therapists focus on improving anatomical structure and posture. Using a more extensive assortment of techniques, including active and passive stretching, range of motion, vibration, and tapotement to help realign and loosen muscle fibers and connective tissues. Releasing tightness in muscles is a crucial intention. As the muscles around joints relax, it increases the joints’ range of motion.

In general, sports massage therapists will have a deeper understanding of human anatomy, supporting what they do. It is worth noting that although a sports massage is not meant to be painful, it can get slightly uncomfortable at times as providers hone in on problem areas.

Expect a general assessment of posture at the beginning and end of a sports massage. Very few techniques in sports massage require cream or oil; therefore, sessions are generally received in loose, comfortable apparel.

Therapists need to efficiently and safely manipulate the muscles, doing no damage to the fragile tissue. There is a delicate line that exists between restoring the tissue and causing further injury!
